My son has started college in Purdue in West Lafayette, Indiana. We travel from the suburbs of Chicago, {290 to 294 to 80... or 355 to 80 east}. Is there anyway to avoid 80/94 when traffic is bumper to bumper and not moving? Also is there a way to avoid the construction at rte 65 and 80?

If you are already on 80/94, head south on whatever exit to Ridge Road. Take Ridge Road east all the way to I-65. That's the only alternate route I know of.
But I would take the skyway/toll road to Broadway then to Ridge then I-65.
Try I90 to 53/Broadway (just before where I65 would be if it was open). Head south past I80 and turn East on E Ridge Rd/RT 6. This will take you to I65.
Otherwise go to mapquest using the shortest route option.
Not knowing your starting point, I used ORD. According to mapquest, the trip is 145.7 mi and will take 2:38 to get there. I don't think congestion and/construction are figured into the estimates:

Grin and bear it...or...don't take the interstates. Avoid that congestion for traffic lights and lower speed limits. The following site gives a route of 159.48 mi in 3:31. That extra time will allow a stop for a restroom break and lunch:

Why not drive a combination of the 2? Avoid the bottlenecks.
I live in southern WI and haven't driven in to Chicago in years! I take the Metra train in to town! They have weekend passes for $5, good all weekend! good luck
