How I stay focused at work:

Step 1. I get rid of all distractions. This includes television, video games, phones (if possible), toys, instant messaging, email, and whatever else may take my attention away from work. Music may be an exception, as it has been known to energize some people while they work. However, if music has an adverse effect on my concentration, I turn it off as well.

Step 2 list - At the start of the day, I define the things I wish to accomplish during the remainder of my workday. I stick to my plan.

Step 3 - I break my tasks into smaller chunks. If I have a list of 3 things to do today, I try to break it down into 6 smaller things. It's easier for me to focus on a task if I know it will only take 1 hour, as opposed to 2.

Step 4 clock - I define strict time limits for each of my tasks. Many people work better under pressure, period. I reward myself with a 5 or 15 minute break after the completion of each task.

Step 5 firefox - If I'm working online, I use separate web browser profiles for work and play. Most modern web browsers allow me to do this. Using this method enables me to work without the distraction of my "recreational" bookmarks and open tabs.
