i do practice qigong for almost a year now and it is pretty effective to me,but some of my friends advised me that tai chi is more effective when it comes to breathing techniques and self control so did any one try both of them?

i've been practicing tai chi and we spend alot of classes practicing qi gong. actually almost everything done in tai chi is involved with qi gong. you doing qi gong will give you an advantage against the other students because alot of them if they are young will have a hard time doing anything slowly. biggest flaw for them is speed. also they don't realize tai chi is mostly trying to understand the body. and if you can feel qi flow, you may be taight about fa jin which is an amazing thing to learn.
Do not listen to people who do not know what the heck they are talking about. Qigong is Tai Chi with emphasis on breathing. If you are doing one you are doing part or most of the other depending on the style. Chi or Qi is energy which is breathing and circulation. Unless you are interested in the combat styles it does not matter much which you use according to my Chinese friends.
BK has a good responce also. When I have my students do Qigong I have them spend some time learning to feel the energy and get in touch with each muscle in their body.
