8 month old toy miniature schnauzer doing pretty well with crate training, going outside to eliminate. have her confined primarily in the kitchen. she goes to the door to go out. However, if we are not right there watching her, she does not let us know she has to go out. How can we get her to signal about going out? We have tried a bell in the past, and that did not really work...

I know just what you mean. My 4 month old Jack Russell female does this, too. We always praise her to the skies when she goes outside where she's supposed to, and we've tried the bell thing, too. But still she will just squat in the house instead of "telling" us she needs to go outside. I don't understand it. She's definitely not dumb. The dog trainer at her puppy school said we "just need to be patient." Oookaaay. . . .
Try a special 'treat' immediately after her 'performance' when she does it outside. She'll soon equate the two and beg to be let out.
many people with mini's have their pups trained to go on a wee wee pad inside the house.. they sell them at the pet stores, which go on a rubber mat, so they don't hurt the floor when they get wet.
<br> i am going thru this,now......... just got an 11 week old golden and she goes out......once i take her out of the crate. she goes well. but if she isn't in the crate............and i thinik its time to go out. she doesn't let me know at all. you just have to CONSTANTLY watch.
Try watching her more... or buying something to put by the door .. so when she goes to the door you will hear it.... like a baby mat that makes noise or something
believe it or not, i taught my pup to 'say please' (bark) to go out. he's not a bark-y guy to begin with, and we had the same issue with him going to the door, but nobody would know. finally, i decided to take matters into my own hands. every time i took him out, i'd tell him to say please and bark at him. he thought i was nuts at first, but then after a day or so, he would arf at me when i told him to say please, and he would get a very tasty treat (tiny bit of turkey lunch meat works wonders). so now he'll come up to me, and put his little feet up on my leg and woof to go out.
