After my dog of 15 years passed away we got a little shitzu. We got him two christmas's ago. He is still not potty trained. Like I dont know what we are doing wrong. He's soo dumb! I mean I take him out all the time an he comes back in and goes! I mean he goes outside then he comes back in and goes. It's different times each day. Like I don't get him. My other dog was fine and he would scratch the door when he would want to go out. But this dog just does whatever he wants. I make him go like 5 times then he comes back in and goes everywhere. Our house smells sooo bad cause of him. Any tips on how to make him stop. I give him treats when he goes outside and gives him spankings when he does. Help me please!!! My dads threatening to give him away!

Toy breed dogs (like Shih Tzu) are extremely hard to house break. It requires a lot of patience and time. It could take up to a year to fully house train a toy breed of dog. You should take him out every two hours and praise him whenever he toilets outside. Dogs like to do their business in a safe and quiet place, so when you take him out take him somewhere nice and quiet and safe. You also need to clean your house from all wee and poo smell. You need to use a pet disinfectant to completely get rid of the pet odor, so your dog won't be entice to toilet in the house.
Just take him out every two hours and put him on a strict feeding schedule. Don't allow him to eat and drink around the clock because then he will most likely have to toilet around the clock. If he does have an accident in the house make sure you clean it up right away with a pet disinfectant. One thing you never want to do is put a dog's nose in the wee / poo because that doesn't teach and/or solve anything. Dogs only associate punishment with what they were last doing, so if a dog is sitting and you come and put the dog's nose in it's wee / poo the dog will think it is getting punish for sitting. That's the way a dog's mind work, so if he does have an accident in the house just clean it up and move on. If you catch him having an accident say "NO" really loud, pick him up and take him outside to finish doing his business.
I understand your frustration with this situation but you have to understand that toy breed dogs are extremely hard to house break. It requires a lot of time and patience and usually takes up to a year or so to fully house break a toy breed. Just follow everything I said above and you should be fine. Hope this helps!
Ah yes, potty training. It's a pain, but it can be done. Just prepare yourself to clean up some messes along the way.
1. Pay attention to your dog - if you see him sniffing or getting ready to squat, then quickly scoop him up and take him outside. Of course it's not always possible to keep and eye on him 24/7.
2. Crate training - it might seem like you're jailing your dog, but some of them actually find comfort and security in it. Just make sure you get one big enough for him to stand up and turn around in.
3. Praise - Dogs don't understand the difference between right and wrong, they don't know that it's "bad" to go all over the house. Most of the time dogs will "go" where they feel safe (like in living rooms, or any other room in the house that has some sort of flooring).
4. BE CONSISTENT
5. If there are other people living in your house, get them involved too.
6. Try not to give him any food or water after 6-7pm because then he will have to "go" during the middle of the night when you're sleeping. Take him out to go potty when you wake up.
Hang in there, I know it's frustrating.
Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://bitly.im/aMLg1
A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.
In the meantime while you are getting him trained to get rid of the smell use "Severe Urine Neutralizer SUN" from Amazon or from removeurine.com. Mix it up and spray or pour it on the urine residue and it will kill the smell. It has to get in contact with the urine residue. Any urine it does not come in direct contact with will continue to smell. So you have to find all the urine spots and figure out how deep it has soaked in and how far it has spread out. Urine will spread when it reaches the backing of the carpet and again when it reaches the pad and the floor under the carpet. It will also soak into some tile and the grout around the tile. Many times the challenge is being able to get the SUN solution to the urine but what it reaches it will kill the odor.
I have a yorkie and pittbull very friendly but the yorkie every one said takes a year or two to potty train. Took us like 5 months. With all our dogs if they poop or pee in the house roll up a newspaper and lightley smack there butt. Also put there nose in it and say no. I know it sounds mean but it's not. It helps them know it's not aloud we do it with all our dogs and it works!
