IF IT HAPPENS AGAIN THEN UR A BAD MOM LOL JUS KIDDING... YOU DID THE BEST THAT YOU COULD ITS HARD TO REACT LIKE YOU SHOULD WHEN UR PANICING...BUT ALL THAT MATTERS IS THAT UR BABE IS STILL ALIVE AND THAT YOU DID WHAT YOU HAD TO DO...NEXT TIME IF IT EVER DOES HAPPEN AGAIN YOU SHOULD CALL AN AMBULANCE ;)
The best thing to do is to take a CPR class or go to the fire department and ask them for a tutorial on how to do the hemlich on small children. Patting them in the back works very well though, but when that dosen't work you are suppose to put your fingers under the ribs kinda, it is so hard to explain, you really need to see it, and then push until it comes up. It is exactly like on an adult but you use your fingers to avoid breaking their little bones. I am sure that the fire department could show you or at least tell you where you can take a course!
I am a CPR instructor and you're suppose to perform emergency CPR on her to get whatever is choking out immediatly. I would recommend you take a CPR class since things like that are a matter of life an death. I can't really describe the maneuver in words, but just make sure to support her head while gently hitting her back to force the food out.
When a child is choking you need to some how hold him on one arm slightly with his head down ward, stomach on your arm, and hit the baby on the back in hard pats between the shoulder blade. An older child about 3 and above, do the regular hymlech...by patting a child or an adult on the back while in an upright position, can make the food lodge farther into the air pipe.
i looked it up online and found some good things
First try not to panic, you are no use to baby if you can not handle the situation and help her.
* Take a first aid/CPR class to learn the right things to do if your baby chokes.
* Look in baby's mouth and if you see something blocking her passage way try to take it out.
* Call 911. The operator can help instruct you on helping the baby as well as send emergency service to you.
Step4* Hold baby in a face-down position, lengthwise on your forearm, head should be pointed toward the ground. If you need support place your forearm on your thigh.
* Give baby five firm back blows between the shoulder blades, using the palm of your hand.
* If baby still gives no response after the back blows then turn her around and place them face up in your other arm.
Step5* Give baby five chest thrusts by placing three fingers in the center of the baby's chest, with your middle finger positioned in between her nipples then raise the middle finger off the chest and use the other two fingers to thrust.
* look again in baby's mouth and see if you see anything blocking her airway. if you do get it out.
* If there is still no response then place your mouth over the baby's nose and mouth securely and blow out into baby's mouth. Your breathe should make baby's chest move up and down. If it doesn't then reposition slightly and try again.
Step6* If there is still no response then do the back blows again and repeat the chest thrusts. And then again the blowing into baby's mouth.
* Try to remain calm and help baby until emergency care gets there.
Step7The most important thing is to call 911 as soon as possible and follow the instructions they give you. Even if baby returns and appears normal you should take baby in to get looked at. You should always practice safety when baby is eating or playing. baby can choke on items around the house just as well as food, so it is important to get down to there level and crawl around your house removing any potentially dangerous items.
Step8When baby is eating make sure she is always sitting up. All the steps that I have listed above are not intended to substitute for professional medical advice or treatment. So make sure that you get the appropriate help for your baby is you think she is choking! Do not worry if you are wrong and baby is only coughing, better safe then sorry!

you can't carry out the Heimlich (?) manouvre on children so what you did was exactly right. It's hard slaps between the shoulder blades and this usually works as you found out. Don't put any pressure on the stomach as another answer states, just hard slaps between the shoulder blades. Well done,it looks like natural instinct took over. This happened to my son quite often as he has a small oesophogus (?) and food would regularly get stuck, especially crusty bread!! I've done this procedure a number of times and it still scares me when i have to do it, so i know how scared u must have felt.
Looking it up and doing it, or taking a course in it are totally different. I have been certified in CPR an infant first aid. In Ohio, Help Me Grow offers courses in these, contact your local health department and ask if there are any courses available. You usually have to pay a small fee. This will put you at ease and help you react better if the situation ever happens again. I know its a really scary seeing your child hurt or in danger.
You did the right thing, especially reacting quickly AND being there while he/she was eating, instead of leaving the room.
Just be careful with babies, as hitting them too hard could cause trauma or broken bones.
Preventative measures, make sure you thouroughly cut up food, and possibly don't give them all the food at once. Rather, hold some of it back so they can't just stuff it all into their mouth.
You did good! when i had that happen to my little one i usually reach in their mouth and see if i can pull whatever is choking them out. if not than I would have probably done what you did. Plus i usually just give them mashed up food or baby food until they are at least 12 months old or older. just watch what they get a hold of cause they will do it again. good luck!!!
You did good! See, from what I've been told, you got to put pressure to the abdomen with thrusts like you did by putting your baby over your knee; you still put pressure to his/her abdominal area. I recommend all parents to learn CPR. I've had to do the Heimlich maneuver twice on my mother since I've learned it simply by reading how to do it on the wall of a Chinese restaurant in my city. Both times, the pill popped right out, and I was glad to both know how to do it and be THERE to do it. Good Job!
You did great!! I think you are suppost to put them over your knees at an angle with their head down and feet up and pat with an upward motion. I know that is a super scary situation and at the time you forget everything you read or learned. Props to you for being such a great mom!!
