Hey,
I plan to run track this spring for the first time, and one of my major concerns is the belief that running track will cause me to lose a lot of my hard earned muscle.
Will I lose muscle running track? and if so what are the steps that I can take to avoid losing this muscle?

If anything it will strengthen you, I don't know about the team you'll be joining but m schools team were very successful and we incorporate weightlifting, tons of core, plyometrics into our running and skills.
You don't automatically lose muscle by running track.
When your body does not get enough calorie intake, and you exercise, the body has no fat stores to burn off, therefore it begins to waste away muscle instead. It's a lethal combination.
However, If you eat enough calories (of the right food groups obviously) to balance with the amount of exercise you are doing, you should not have a problem. It is always good to keep up with weights/resistance training also, to make sure your muscles stay toned.
It's all about getting a healthy balance, just make sure that you eat enough so your body has the energy it needs to run on.
