I hate to tell you this, but you should back off. Just wait and see if anything happens between Earl and the girl, and if not, go for it! If they are attracted to each other though, time to look somewhere else. If you take the girl from your friend, he'll be hurt, and you'll lose his friendship. You might lose the girl too. That happened to me--a friend of mine was helping me hook up with a guy, and then she fell for him. The two of them started going out when they both knew I liked him. I was never really friends with either of them again.
