yeah watchmen and the sandman are good. also v for vendetta & promethea by alan moor. batman fear the reaper. kingdom come by mark waid & alex ross(maybe better to read that if your familiar with the dc character). Superman: Peace of Earth, Batman: War on Crime, Shazam!: Power of Hope, Wonder Woman: Spirit of Truth, JLA: Secret Origins, and JLA: Liberty and Justice by paul dini and alex ross are good as a intro to the characters.

Watchmen is arguably the greatest graphic novel of all time. Plus the movie is about come out.
