I would LOVE to use Photoshop, but I am not spending an unreasonably amount of money on a cd. Yes, I know it's the most professional program out there for what I need, but regardless the amount is ridiculous.
I have tried pirating the program and of course the activation keys or "THE CRACK" doesn't work or I have zero patience to do it.
SO, is GIMP from gimp.org have some of the features Photoshop has to offer? Give me your opinions on the program...
THANK YOU

GIMP has all the features that Photoshop does. More even.
However, there is a bit of a learning curve using GIMP as those features are often not in a similar place or done the same way as PS does. Some aren't even named similarly to PS's functions.
GIMP is a very full featured photomanipulation program and once you learn its ins and outs, there is little you can't do with GIMP and the things you can't are things you won't be able to get PS to do either.
You can essentially do everything with the GIMP that you can with Photoshop - just need to learn different techniques. Don't believe people who tell you otherwise - they're generally just so used to Photoshop that they won't give the GIMP a real good try. Why would you, if you're already familiar with Photoshop? I wouldn't in their position, but for home use, I can't afford Photoshop. I used to use it for work, but stopped when I realised I was getting more familiar with the GIMP. Plus there are some interesting plugins for the GIMP that would cost plenty on Photoshop, or not even be available until later. To be honest, Photoshop does spoil you in making things easy, and that's what you pay for. Some things might take a bit more research in order to figure out how to do them in the GIMP, but it's all still doable.
Here's one good video podcast to start with:

On the one hand while I'm primarily an Open Source User (Linux and I'll come to that) i've been on the fringes of publishing since the seventies. Adobe has licensed fonts from Linotype and stuff like that which we need for commercial printing. As an open source project GIMP can't afford to. I still use a distro which emphasizes freedom and go through the trouble of addins like Separate+ because Adobe's copy-protection scheme writes to the boot loader and render Linux systems unbootable every time you use it. So GIMP lacks features we need and Adobe makes defective products.
there are thick books available on GIMP.
there are also contributed resources, which, if you dig to find them and install them manually, (they are on an ftp server - suggest you use an FTP client to get them because there are a LOT of files)
that includes brushes, gradients, textures, etc.
GIMP has a lot of the same basic features as photoshop. you can use photoshop filters I believe (but they have to be compiled for your OS I think). and there are some really useful filters out there, like some that put the focus back in photos or remove motion blur.
if you want a nice inexpensive package, try Corel Paint Shop Pro X2. it includes a nice set of vector graphics, and it also does photoshop filters. it also has a nice array of effects a photo touchup stuff.
Hey,
If you are searching for Gimp you can download it for free here http://bit.ly/1lqfqGa
It's a must have program.
Cheers ;)
Personally, I love GIMP. Its basically a ugly/ slightly more complicated but free photoshop. Tutorials help though.
Okay, hon. Photoshop has tabs and tabs and tabs and tabs with subtabs and subtabs of those subtabs on virtually everything you can imagine. GIMP is free. Photoshop is 600+ bucks, you do the math.
I love photoshop, I am skilled at it, people pay me to do stuff for them on it. You can't do anything as skillfully or as nicely on GIMP, GIMP is absolute fail compared to the awesome that is photoshop, I'm sorry to tell you. :/
PHOTOSHOP CS4...It Works Like a Charm. I've done a lot of good things about it too and paid well because of it. THANK YOU PHOTOSHOP!!!
Try Photoshop Elements. Its only $99 and has almost all the features of the full version.
