You get that error if you are trying to perform an operation on, typically, a column of data. If there is a 'merged' cell in the middle of the cells you are acting upon, you will get this message.
I would suggest that you refrain from merging cells as much as you possibly can. The benefits obtained, to me, are seldom worth the headaches merging can bring.
If you want to achieve the same effect as merging, try using the 'Center Across Selection' option.
Enter the text you wish to 'center' in the first cell.
Highlight however many columns you wish to center the text across.
I've never been able to figure that one out. I unmerge the cells, do the copy/paste/whatever, and then go back and re-merge if necessary. Actually, I really don't have a lot of use for the merge function - it seems to be more of a hindrance than a help in many cases.
Its telling you that because the sorting you are trying to do would interfere with some cells that you have merged. All you have to do is find those merged cells and unmerge them, and it'll work fine.

Unmerge the merged cells
Copy from or to the merged range as a separate operation
Merge cells identically in both areas.
