A friend and I are thinking about backpacking around Europe and Asia for a year or two. We still need to figure out our visas! If we have a Schengen Visa can we work while we travel? Are we only allowed to stay in those 25 countries for 90 days or is it 90 for each country? When we travel to other countries can we stay for a total trip (including the 25 already) for more than 90 days? Do all european countries require a visa? Is there an application fee for all of them? Does it make it easier if you are a dual citizen of US and Australia? Can we loose our US citizen ship for any reason? I don't think I have anymore questions. Thanks!

With the exception of Russia and Belarus, US citizens don't need a visa for Europe.

Same is true of Australian citizens (except that Ukraine also requires a visa):

You can stay for max. 90 days (in any 180-day-period) within the Schengen area, which covers much of the EU. That is the total stay in the area as a whole, not in each country. (The area has 26 member countries, otherwise you could stay a total of over six years, which is clearly not the intention!)
There are also countries in Europe which are outside of the Schengen area, and where you can therefore stay an additional period of time. The UK lets you stay 6 months, Ireland 3 months, and Turkey 3 months.
So in theory at least you could go to the Schengen area for 3 months, then to the UK for 3 months, to the Schengen for 3 months, to Ireland for 3 months, back to the Schengen for 3 months, to Turkey for 3 months, to Schengen for 3 months, to the UK for another 3 months, and back to Schengen again. That's your two years done right there!
You won't be allowed to work, at least not officially, although I dare say you could get a casual job in a beach bar somewhere and get away with it. In fact pretty much every beach bar I've ever been to there's always an Aussie or Kiwi or South African or what-not working there. :-)
You may stay in the Schengen area for a total of 90 days in a 6 month period...not 90 days in each country. You would need to travel to the UK or a non-Schengen country after 90 days. No, you cannot work while traveling in Europe ...except for with the sites below. You can see site below to see which countries you need visas for and which you do not...3rd site. No you cannot loose your American citizenship ( or Australian) for going traveling
for a couple of years.
