Im interested in buying a Toyota Celica for my second car. I currently have a pontiac vibe (toyota matrix) so im familiar with the engine and aftermarket support, but I dont know how the driving will be different in a lighter coupe.
The differences between the GT and GTS: 40 horsepower, GTS has variable valve timing WITH lift technology, compression is 10:1 on GT, GTS has 11.5:1. Eventually i would choose forced induction over a high compression N/A.
any input is helpful, drive characteristics, personal experience etc.

I'd go for a Celica with the lower compression 1ZZ motor over the 2ZZ, it's got some extra torque and I like that. Then I'd just go over and pick up the TRD supercharger that bolts right in. Best part about adding the supercharger is that is also comes with a warranty, and you can't go wrong with it. If you pick up an older Celica (like an Alltrac) it's already turbo straight from the factory.
Not saying the higher compression 2ZZ will definitely go boom if you decide to either supercharge or turbo it cause the Lotus 2ZZ comes straight from factory supercharged and that's proven... but tuning a high compression motor for any forced induction to me is like hot potato with a grenade in the mix. Plus there's some "weakness" about the oil pump in the 2ZZ that supposedly makes it turn into hot shrapnel if you over rev the motor.
Look at the fuel requirements, if economy is important to you. Compression ratio 11.5:1 is ultra-high, so turbocharging that will create a bomb. Test drive the car. Discussion cannot give you anything near that experience.
