I'm just curious, you hear 7th chords pretty much everywhere (whether dominant or major/minor) but:
1. What music are 6th chords most common in? (Or were first mainly used in)
2. How do you describe their 'sound'

A 6th chord is just a seventh chord in inversion. For example, C6 is CEGA. Re-order the notes and you have ACEG, which is just Am7. So whatever your answers are for seventh chords also apply to 6th chords.
