Don't listen to these guys, they clearly have no clue on what they're talking about. I am a developer at Microsoft so I know a thing or two about computers. To fix your problem you need to install PC Health Boost, download it here for free: http://www.pchealthcleaner.net/
It's very light and it's the only antivirus/cleaner with a 99.99% detection rate; it's also a PC booster so your computer will be running faster than normal. Install it, hit run and problem solved. It shouldn't take you more than 5 minutes.
If you google that error code, just type in the number and it will tell you it is a Vista problem, so I would be contacting microsoft tech support, for them to solve. I hade a similar problem with Xp would down load but not install, it turned out to be the windows installer file. Your choice contact, microsoft, or download manually to hard drive then install, very time consuming and you have to know what fixes are for your rig.
Hey man, its quite simple.
Go to this link - http://support.microsoft.com/kb/949104
Scroll down to the middle of web page to How to obtain the latest Windows Update Agent.
Below there are files for x86, and x64 OS, Choose the download for your OS.
Then install the file. Reboot the PC, now run the windows updates again.
Windows Update is now good as New.
You can't install all of the updates. Just leave it. It could just be that your drivers are a bit old.
