There is a ferry from San Francisco to Oakland (or at least there was when I was last there) but it's for commuters and probably not convenient (check the schedule). I drove in the Bay Area for 35 years and do not recommend renting a car for the uninitiated & unarmed. BART is a relatively clean & safe electric train system, so I'd recommend you take BART from one of the Market Street stations (they're all under ground but fairly easy to find) to the San Leandro station (it's above ground and smells a bit better). From there you can catch an AC Transit bus or get a cab.
Definitely BART. It's the cheapest and fastest way to get around. As there are two stops in San Leandro, its a fairly safe bet that atleast one of them gets you close to where you'd like to be. BART is almost always on time though, so if you've got a schedule make sure your at the station because you will get left.
yo could bypass to hate and ashberry. thats the place i used to kick it on the daily. you will see alot of sturdy shops and resturants there. you additionally can bypass to work out 39 or fishermans warf. the golden gate bridge is over rated. so is alcatraz yet that replaced into kinda exciting the 1st time i went. there is lots to do.... basically arise with issues. have exciting:)
