A travel agent is an expert on travel. They are the agent for hotels, airlines, ships, etc and usually get a percentage of the cost. Airlines have deeply cut these percentages and many agents now charge for air reservations.
The do get offered low rate and free travel from the companies that they sell tickets for.
Many junior colleges offer courses in the travel industry.
a travel agent recommends and books peoples holidays. The more experienced you are the better you are paid - in the uk the average is £12k p.a. If you work for an independant travel company then as the travel agent you are free to sell whatever you want but if you work for one of the big multiple agents like first choice, thomas cook you are pressured to sell their holidays. I have been a travel agent for 10 years and I love my job. It is very rewarding but your heart must be in it 100 % due to the low pay. You do get paid incentives on most holidays but this is usually a few £s. You are basically a sales person and if you dont have the skills and forwardness needed for this role you will not suceed. I have travelled extensively as we get cheap deals and occassional free (educational) holidays. Feel free to email me any further questions
