I have been wanting to get another puppy for a long time now, but my main concern is potty training. When i do get a dog I am going to take about 10 days total off to be with the dog. But once I go back to work then what? the puppy will go from going out all the time to a few times a day, i can walk the dog in the morning around 7:45am then when my mom gets off work she normally gets to the house around 4:10 or so but thats 8 hours without being let out, i live too far away from work to go home at lunch. i was thinking i could try using the potty pads as an alternative and lock the puppy in the kitchen on the tile after the morning walk, then as it gets older by like 6months take the pads away? I dont want the dog to think its ok to use the pads forever just as a crutch since he wont be able to hold his bladder at 10 weeks or so for 8 hours. i am off wekends so its only the weekdays but im not sure what to do please if anyone has ideas help me out.
Update:Also, I had a dog before but when i got the dog he was already potty trained. I had him for about 8 years but he got cancer and the surgerys didnt work & he died. I dont think 8 hours is too long to be alone once trained. I do have a cat but i figure if i get the puppy as apuppy and not grown already they can get along like my last dog did. I can take the puppy out more than twice a day. definately in the morning
when i get home before i go to bed & at night if needed. For the first week like i said i can take off&then probably for the next two weeks i can probably make it home at lunch (its 20 minutes both ways i have an hour lunch)but do u think after amonth id be able to stop coming home at lunch would the dog be old enough to hold it or use the pad if needed? i know it can take a month or sop to train completely. i am just afraid that once the dog is older that he will think he has to use the pad all the time and not learn its outside he should go i will use the same feeding time

Puppy potty training takes a lot of patience and you have to be consistaint or you will be trying to potty train invain. All dogs are different when it comes to training,I had to take my puppy out at least 3 or 4 times a day then once in the middle of the night at first,I thought she would never stop crapping in the floor!! It can take 2 weeks to 2 months to get a puppy to be totally trained,my mother in law keeps puppy pads down now even though her dog is almost 2 years old,it helps curb accidents on the floor while she has to be gone at work. You need to be able to take your dog out at least 2 times a day after you get the dog potty trained, once in the morning and once in the evening,3 times a day would be best. While you are training you need to be there so you can be able to let the puppy out many times a day so she will learn to go outside to potty.I think as long as you teach her to use the pads and get her to go outside at least 2 times a day,you will be fine!!Get yourself a new friend!!
Rubbing her face in it will not do any good. You need to be consitent and supervise her constantly. When you cant supervise, crate her. If you catch her "in the act" tell, her firmly "NO" then take her to the desired spot, and praise her once there... even if she dribbled thru the house. You cant scold her for a pile you find after the fact.. slap yourself for not watching her better. Clean up all messes with a good cleaner. Personally I think the mats are just confusing to pups.. most "pad trained" dogs I know still often miss, and many of them will use other surfaces that are similar to the pee pad, such as a mattress. "Inside/outside" seems to be more defining of where's an acceptable place to potty. There's no "fast" way to housebreak. It can take weeks, or even months. Many pups are actually housebroken too, or have the concept, but they do not have the bladder control, which is why you need to supervise and make sure she gets to the potty area well before the urge strikes.
You have some good ideas there.
you are right a puppy can't hold it for 8 hours and will become better in time (dogs aren't adults till about 2 years)
an Alternative is a relative or a local pet sitter.
have someone come over once a day and take the puppy out.
Pet sitters are inexpensive for once a day and the puppy will build a relationship with them, which may become helpful if you go on vacation down the road.
Hi, my family just got a puppy a couple weeks ago. The puppy pads work very well for training. We use them and they are so easy and convenient. What we are going to do is every day move the puppy pad a little bit closer to the door. Then eventually the puppy pad will reach outside so that when he has to go to the bathroom he will go on athe puppy pad outside. Don't worry about your puppy having an accident becuase the pad wasnt inside, because when he/she has to go they will start sniffing and circling(thats when you bring him/her outside to do their buisness. After a while of using the puppy pad outside, remove the pad and place your puppy in the spot where the puppy pad used to be. Hopefully your puppy will go to the bathroom and if he does make sure to praise him as much as possible, not one "good boy" but treats, petting, and praising. I hope this helps you. Good luck with your future puppy. Speaking of puppies, my puppy just chewed up my other computers wire and broke the computer. Gotta run, hope this helps. Isabel
You may want to try kennel training. Dogs tend not to go in an area they have to lay in. Also try getting a puppy on a regular schedule of feeding at the same time every day, and taking out at the same times also. If all else falls, go to a shelter and adopt an older dog that is already house broke.
I have used the puppy pads and they work but later on you may not want to use them, because once my dog got a little older, he would drag them through the house and tear them up. Just try to take him out whenever you get the chance.
I'm sorry, but 8 hours is far too long to leave any dog. Its just not fair. Not only will they make a mess but they'll be stressed and lonely. It will cause behavioural problems in most dogs.
Even if you got an adult dog that would be far too long, you'd have to pay a dog walker to take it out for an hour halfway through.
I have a toy poodle that's 4 weeks old and I use newspaper. Every time she starts to sniff, I put her on the paper. She'll sniff around for awhile, but eventually she will do her duty. If she tries to walk off the paper, I put her back on. She's going on the paper regularly now.
