I am using Photoshop CS5 and every time I zoom out, it shows me like a checkerboard patter instead of my picture. But when I zoom in, everything is fine, I can see the picture, but it's too large. By the way, I have my dimensions to 1600x1200 pixels. My computer monitor is not that large, it's about 27 inches. Thanks for the help in advance.

Your monitor has nothing to do with it. It's most likely your computer specs -- ram, cpu, and/or graphic card. Check "performance" in the preferences window of Photoshop. Turn off "Enable OpenGL" if it's on, see if that helps.
1600 x 1200 isn't that large of an image, but large enough to cause issues for you if you don't have decent puter specs. Does this happen for you with smaller images? If not, then it's probably a spec. issue.
